Wal-Mart Dog Treats Could Be Tainted

Wal-Mart has quietly pulled two brands of dog treats off the shelf after customers complained about the safety of the Chinese-made treats. No recall has been announced at this time while Wal-Mart does testing on the products.

The store pulled its Chicken Jerky Strips from Import-Pingyang Pet Product Co. and Chicken Jerky from Shanghai Bestro Trading on July 26 after a woman complained her two-year old Chihuahua died after eating Bestro Chicken Jerky Strips. It was reported that an autopsy found the dog died of an infection caused by toxic bacteria.

Wal-Mart also placed a computerized block on all cash registers to prevent workers from selling the products. The store had received other complaints from customers as well who claimed their pets fell ill because of the treats. Owners of pets should check their shelves to see if they already have these products. No recall has been announced but at this point while testing is being conducted, but it is not a good idea to keep feeding these treats.

This is just one more product from China that could be harmful to American pets. We all remember the massive pet food recall in March, when retailers began pulling products made in China that included the chemical melamine — a contaminant that's a byproduct of several pesticides. Then just recently, the toy recalls of toys made in China because of lead contaminates.

At this point, I check my labels. If it says "Made IN China", I would use extreme caution when purchasing the product. We have to buy American made products to ensure the safety of our pets and children.
