How To Celebrate The Last Day Of School With Your Child

The last day of school is always filled with excitement. What can be worse for a child then to come home to a house of gloom and doom after a day of thrilling climatic fun? As parents, you can make the transition to summer a celebration and recognize your child's accomplishment of completing a new year. The first few moments after school lets out can set the tone for the entire summer. Why not make it a fun time then?
A Taste Of Summer Breakfast
Create a fun atmosphere the moment your child wakes up for their last day. It will most likely be a day of busy work so let them start by getting some of their energy out. Turn the music up loud and dance the morning away. Give them a unique special breakfast that gives them a taste of the summer fruits. It could be a watermelon smoothie, strawberry or blackberry muffins or eggs that are your child's school colors (use food coloring). Don't be afraid to cook away from the norm. You can even let them have a cupcake for breakfast. They are only kids once and the last day of school only happens once a year.
Photograph The Day
We all take pictures on the first day. Why not the last? Chronicle your child's entire last day to put at the end of that year's scrapbook. Take the same pose as the beginning of the year, be it at the bus stop or in the classroom. Relive that first day in pictures.
After School Fun
What better way to celebrate the end of the day then a water fight. It is summer and the heat is already sitting in and cooling off is always fun. If both parents are off, meet your child at the bus stop armed with water guns or water balloons. The kids will love the surprise attack. You can also have a planned neighborhood water fight scheduled. Have each family prepare the night before filling water guns, balloons or even setting the sprinkler schedule. Then make it a battle royale after school between each family on the street.
Banner Run
This is probably the best idea I have ever seen. I saw it in the Family Fun magazine. Remember in football games how the players run through the banner. Create a banner for your child. It could say something as simple as "Summer" or "Off to 2 nd Grade." Your child will enjoy the extra attention and the act of celebrating.
Plan a Special Dinner
Nothing makes a kid feel loved after being soaked in a water war more than a home-cooked meal. Plan your child's favorite dinner(s) complete with a special dessert. If you have a special plate, make sure your child eats from it for the night. During dinner, have your child tell their favorite part of the past year.
These are just a few ideas. I am sure you have your own traditions as well. Feel free to leave your traditions or great ideas in the comment section.
