It is that time of the year again when all we hear is, "I'm bored!" It was always funny to me that kids look so forward to being out of school counting down the days until that final bell. Then once they made it, they had the nerve to say they were bored.

Here are some activities to end that summer boredom.

Local Library

Go early and get the calendar. Libraries can be a free source of entertainment all summer long. They offer story times, movie times, clubs, special writers and activities and the list goes on and on. It also offers free time out of the house. When you are having one of those days, a trip to the peaceful library can be just the solution. It is amazing how quick the fussing stops when kids get to sit in those cool chairs and explore books!

Local Pool

Buy a season pass or gym membership to the closest pool. Hit the pool first thing when it opens every day. Pack a picnic lunch then head home for rest. You will be surprised at how much swimming knocks kids out.

Plan themes

Kids love doing things beyond the norm. Why not schedule themes during the summer. You can have a Dr. Seuss week and cook green eggs and ham for breakfast, dress up like favorite characters, etc. You can have movie days, Prince and Princess days where you get to slay dragons and be pampered, Hawaiian luau days, etc. Get creative and do things that your kids are into. If your kids love science, have a science day-check out stevespanglerscience.com for some great ideas.

Season passes

Buy a season pass to the local zoo, museum or theme park. Usually season passes pay for themselves after two trips. It is an economical way to provide some fun. Look for specials before the official summer kick off.

Churches

Churches are notorious for planning summer camps with the majority being free or costing very little. Vacation Bible Schools can be a fun time for kids as they do crafts, sing and have fun activities.

Camps

If you have the money to spend, look into buying camps or lessons. Swim lessons, sport camps, etc. can provide learning and fun. Our local college also offers camps so be sure to check that out as well.

These are just the tip of the iceberg as far as activities go. Get with friends and see what they are doing this summer. You can plan a summer playgroup and take trips to the park. Remember to check out the local papers and resources and enjoy a non-boring summer!!
