Activities For National Handwriting Day

For those who are unaware, National Handwriting Day is celebrated on Jan. 23 each year. The day was established in 1977 by the Writing Instruments Manufacturers Association.

The holiday was established for the obvious reason, to get people using pens, pencils and paper which obviously meant better business for them. The date Jan. 23 was chosen because that was the birthday of John Hancock, the first person to sign the Declaration of Independence.

I am certain in the 70's, they did not realize how important this day could become. I, for one, look forward to the upcoming holiday for nothing more then the nostalgia of going back and using a pen or pencil.

With the abundance of technology, it is a wonder people even know how to write anymore.

To get you in the spirit of the day, I composed a list of activities to celebrate with your family and loved ones. I wish so much I could hand write them and scan them in, but we will settle for the type for today.

Write a letter

Let's be honest, senior citizens love the old-fashioned letters coming in the mail, but did you know kids do as well. This holiday send a heartfelt letter to that family member far away. It will be so much more personal in your handwriting.

Write a love poem

It doesn't have to be original. Your significant other will be overjoyed just by the time it took you to make it more personal in your own handwriting. Nothing says love more then a handwritten note.

Notes in the lunchbox

Write a short note to your loves ones and place it in their lunch the night before. It will make them feel special and appreciated.

Gifts

Buy gifts for the day. After all, that is what the day was designed for. Visit a local art shop or gift ship and buy monogrammed note pads, portfolios, pens, etc. It will be a sweet appreciation gift as well as get the person excited about writing again. Who doesn't love a cool pen!!

Visit a local hospital

Have your family or school write letters to those ill this holiday. Go to the hospital and ask for first names to make them more personal. Who knows? The kids may end up with a pen pal through all of this.

These are obviously just suggestions. Feel free to include your own in the comment section below. Just do take a moment on Jan. 23 and jot something down in remembrance of the way life used to be when it came to handwriting.
