Rodeo Songs/Fingerplays For The Preschool Classroom

Yee-Haw! It is that time again! Rodeo is my favorite theme in the preschool classroom. It has it all! Fun dress-up, farm animals and fun snacks that are sure to delight.
Perhaps the most exciting is the unlimited amount of songs,fingerplays and activities for the kids. Here are a few that we do every year in my class. The kids love them so I thought I would pass them on in case you needed some new ones.
I'm a littlecowpoke. Here's my hat. (point to self and tip hat)
Here are my spurs(point to heels)
and here are my chaps.(pat legs)
AS soon as I wake up,(pretend to stretch)
I work all day, (pretend to lasso a cow)
I get on my horse(pretend to get on a horse)
and gallop away (galloping motion).
Cowboy Pokey (Hokey Pokey)
You put your lasso in, you put your lasso out, you put your lasso in and you twirl it all about. You do the Cowboy pokey and you turn yourself around, that's what it's all about.
Repeat with:
Right spur (shake it) Left spur (shake it)
Tip your hat in (wave it)
Gallop your horse in (ride it)
5 Little Cowboys-this is great to do with some cowboy clip art, puppets, etc.
5 Little cowboys sitting on a gate. The first one said, "This Rodeo's Great!" The Second one said, "I love the clowns." The third one said, "I like the sounds." The fourth one said, "Can you ride a bull?" /the fifth one said, "NO, but it sure looks cool!" Then buzz went the bell and the gate flew open. And off went the cowboys a ridin' and a ropin!
For The Texas teachers (you can substitute any state)
I'm a tex, i'm a tex, I'm a Texas star. (hold up a star with hands)
I eat my beans form an old tin jar. (pretend to eat)
I can ride 'em I can rope 'em I will show you how it's done. (pretend to ride and lasso)
Come on to Texas where you will be number one! (Make the come to me motion with arm, then hold up the number one)
Cowboy Stew
Cowboy stew cowboy stew (pretend to stir)
if I don't get some I don't know what I'll do (pout)
Take away my cowboy hat (let the kids throw their hat)
Take away my boots (point to boots)
but Please don't take away my cowboy stew. (shake heads no or wave finger no)
Dressing the cowboy (rhyming prompt) This is a great project to do with a clip art and velcro.
Desers and prairies are the cowboy's scenes: To protect his legs, he wears sturdy blue ________(have the kids yell "jeans")
The cowboy bent and ran and knelt. To keep his pants up, he wore a ____(belt)
When out in the desert, Cowboy's don't want to get hurt. They cover their arms with a strong wool _____(shirt)
The coyote howls, and owl hoots. On his feet, he wears some ___(boots)
It is yellow, but it's not a banana: Around his neck he wears a ___(bandana)
A cowboy is a cowboy, and that is that! On top of his head, he wears a ten-gallon _____(hat)
Now he's all dressed from head to feet. Yippee! our cowboy looks rooting' tootin' neat!
Music during rodeo time really gets the energy out. Remember you can also go with staples like Old MacDonald had a Farm or Baa Baa Black Sheep-any of the songs with animals in them. You can also turn on some country music and let the kids dance. Teach them to line dance! Get creative! Prechoolers love music and rodeo so this theme should be a big hit!
