Texas is a state full of rich history and tradition. When it comes Rodeo time, there is no greater joy then teaching preschoolers about that history and tradition.

There is so many activities out there to teach rodeo. This article will only deal with arts and crafts for teaching the Texas rodeo theme in the classroom.

Bluebonnet Art

This project is definitely a staple in every classroom across Texas. The Bluebonnet is the Texas state flower and should be taught as such. Kids in Texas are exposed to bluebonnets at an early age being dragged by parents for those cute award-winning snapshots. This is an easy art project. Draw a stem, then allow preschoolers to dip their fingers in blue paint or ink to make fingerprints for the petals of the flower.

Branding

Kids love doing art work with their initials. Why not help them do some Branding art with the first letter of their name. Talk to the kids about Longhorns and cows and how they are branded. Then let them create their own brand. A fun way to do this is to get blue jean pockets from a thrift store or fabric store. Use a permanent marker to write the letter of their name. Then let them decorate with glitter glue, sequins, etc. Place a magnet on the back for them to showcase on the refrigerator.

Cows

I love letting the kids get messy during art time since they tend to not get that stimulation at home. Print out a template of a cow that is plain white. Let the kids sponge on or finger paint brown or black spots on the cows.

Horses

Cut out two simple horse heads for the kids to decorate. Allow them to glue yarn for the hair. Lay out to dry. Staple the heads over a dowel stick to make a stick horse. Allow the kids to have horse races later in the day.

Bandanas

What cowboy or cowgirl outfit is complete without a bandana? Go to your local fabric store and buy cream colored or red colored sheets of fabric. Cut in triangle shape. Then take sponge shapes and dip in paint. The kids love making something they can wear. We did a star and a horse and a Texas. They turned out really cute.

Boots

Cut out a shape of boot. Show the kids pictures of boots and allow the kids to decorate their own boots. Put out all the supplies you can think of: markers, dotters, glittler glue, pom poms, feathers, etc. You will be amazed at the designs the kids come up with.

These are just a few suggestions to get your creative juices flowing. Be sure to leave your own in the comment section below.
